Widden Forest, 7,900 ft., Sheep Range, Clark Co., Nev.
10 June awake to an overcast sky, temp. in 40's - a wind came up and continued until late afternoon. Passing camadas all day & thunder in distance after 9 a.m. The high wind had a depressing effect upon bird activity in the lower canyon - it seemed. Only a few warblers, nuthatches & chickadees seen or heard. Hermit Thrushes seem to prefer hill sides of rock and pine needles, tall pines and/or firs, plus young trees of these species. This situation is in most circumstances shaded N facing slopes.
White-throated Swifts seen almost daily, the never more than 2 and often seen at same time as under-green swallows to junipers & only 3 enjadonas seen this a.m. Contopas seen in lower canyon & about cabin - not too abundant. Shot a Virginia Warbler out of a young fir in canyon. Came back up at 11:40 m. & went up to spring for 1/2 hr. Saw: 2 Bl-throated gray warblers, 1 audubon, 1 Bl-headed Grosbeak and about 25 Cassin Finch of which 1/3 were adults.
Neary clear away by 3 p.m., at 5:00 I went up
