istman, G.M. 1963 Journal 5 June Hidden Forest 7,900 ft., Sheep Range, Chubbs, N.Y. until after 10 p.m. temp. in evening 46°F. 6 June Clear, 31° F. at 6 a.m. walked down canyon again. Were Warbling Vireos this am. then yesterday. Carefully examined area where d that as the whip-poor-will only found part of a tail feather with the white web. Many graticathes, chipadees few & frightly. Heard a flisher so, as hed suggested, gave a horned owl call. it flew 100 yds up canyon toward me. Another call & squeak brought it in to top of snag & got it. heard at camp where d saw a Sparrow Hawk (2?) perched on top of snag and heard a black-headed Grosbeak singing. At 4 p.m. d went to spring - 200 ups to N, up a small side canyon & watched for hinds to come in. 4 Audubon warblers, 3 Townsend Solts. (one feed another in snag), 20♂1♀ Carpodacus Cassinii (also 207). Walked up hill & back - no Creepers, many bl-thr. gray warblers & pygmy nuthatches in pine forests. At 7:38 p.m. d walked down canyon- cloudy, 34°F, still light. Saw a gray fox cross the road 100 yds. below cabin, didn't run when it saw me but continued, stopped at squeak. Gluckly progressed to the 'whip-poor-will' area - tried "poops", screesh owl calls & squeales, dawn & bask. called 3 poorwills. Heard a long-screed out at distance up 2 facing side canyon. Started running lightly at 9:45 p.m. -few moths flying. By owl response. By 10:30 enough snow to cause the ground! Glad to leave this
