5 June Hidden Forest, 7,900 ft., Sheep Range, Clark Co., Nev. Before 9 a.m. about a dozen violet-green swallows were flying low over road in open area several 100 yds. down canyon. Two humming daws were flying about together & once lit on rocks on N. side of Canyon. At 8 p.m. slowly walked down canyon, shot a Hermit Thrush from a small pine. until total darkness -- about 9:45 I got no answers to Flamedulated Owl calls. Cool - in 40's F, with little wind & overcast sky. At this time I hear one poor-will call & saw one on road. Then saw a smallish bird fly into branch (14") of pine near edge of canopy, about 25 ft. up. It immediately flew back up canyon wall & answered to my owl call. Then heard sharp "quirt" from sandy bottom of stream course, put light on, red eye shine & got a poor- will. Then heard "Whip-poor-will" - proceeded 50 yds. down canyon when the call became loud and repeated continuously - followed - although it sounded 'at hand' it was at least 100 yards away. I got a red eye shine from the top of a pine snag & shot - did not hear anything hit. Searched for 1 hour with no luck. The "Whip-poor-will" call was the same as we heard the other a.m. On way down saw a porcupine - when the light was flashed on it it stood on its hind legs facing me. Owl calls all of the way back - one answer from a distance. Clearing the almost full moon didn't read canyon bottom
