Christman J.H. 1963 2 Journal 4 June Hidden Forest, 7,900 ft., Sheep Range, Clark Co. Nev. at 7 am. with canyon in deep shadows I went up the canyon which enters 100 yds. below the cabin - from the east. Circled up hill - little bird activity - shot one white-hearted nut hatch. Hit an area with an active Empidonax singing & flying about (see E. alberti). At this site also collected a hairy woodpecker which was chapping up a 1' white fir. progressed up hill (N. facing & relatively dense pine - firs) to a ridge of another Canyon of the same drainage - The vegetation on this exposed S. facing slope was open needle carpeted slope, plus huge P. ponderosa & white firs. - some dead threespots shrubs - ( Cercocarpus ?). The bird activity was great - Empidonax, cantopus, chickadees, Saddleback & Bl- the Gray Doubles. Down steep gradient canyon to camp - many Paristota. Fowls much less than up canyon. Shot a pygmy nut hatch and a w. bluebird in pines in front of cabin. At this elevation Pinus ponderosa is the dominate tree, with white firs second in abundance - no oaks, and little undergrowth - only sparse Piles in forest areas. stunted aspen (up to 10' high) in some N. facing slopes of talus, etc. down main canyon. Few grasses in same areas - few flowers. South facing slopes, and well drained areas with Prigow, jumper, & ? Cercocarpus shrubs. P. aristota subdominate in mesic forest spots at this elevation.
