21 Clifton, N.M. 1962 Journal 26 June Strawberry Cr., 8,000 ft. Snake Range, White Pine Co., Nevada Empidonax #917 had a yellow jacket wasp in its clothes and was shot from an aspen at the narrow end of the stream just a few feet from the sage cantered bill seat. The Spizella breweri shot today was singing out in company with another individual. All the troglodytes I could call to mind that I can remember were singing. About 8 p.m. we drove down the road, 3/4 mi., down we saw one night-herb - on down the canyon we saw 2 poor-wills & collected one. Sparrows out in valley. On way back about 10 p.m. we saw one small mammal - perognathus size cross the road - the first small mammal thus far seen. Warm evening. 27 June Went down the creek to meadow, etc. at crossing. All day after 5:30 p.m. we have had a strong down canyon wind - big aspen sway. This just about ruined hunting. Saw one W. tanager - singing in an aspen grove & in a large fir. Canyapes are fairly abundant along stream. Shot the one Empidonax & saw from willow clump in boggy area, with aspen over head. His six birds flying about large aspen in meadow. Audubon warblers are singing in aspen under large firs. Y-b. sapsuckers abundant. I have seen no pinus ponderosa in this canyon and there are no cottonwood clumps anywhere down canyon. Willows are spotty & aspen go far down to lower elevations. The spruce seem to be as abundant as the firs here.
