26 June Strawberry Creek, 8,000 ft. Snake Range, White pine Co., Nevada.
width and steep; running water & juncess meadams.
Warbling Vireos, robins, house wrens (collected one), shot
one "split-pea" Empidonax and lost another. Found
a nest of a yellow-bellied Sapsucker in an aspen
along the stream, 20 ft. up, young calling, parent bird
went in hole; Aspen & fir about - not a dead tree.
Shot a ? Hairy woodpecker in an aspen - was calling
loudly. But the dense dark fir area a ruby-crowned
kinglet discovered me & scolded loudly & followed me
for 20 or so yards. V-green swallows. Several huge
old firs are dead here - the ground covered with
yellow needles, much downed timber. House sign.
Walked back up the steep hill to bridge - many blue-
hills & clipping spanaus in Cevocarpus forest.
One western tanager singing like a robin.
A rapiter hawk looked like a Cooper as to size.
Earlier in a.m. I shot a merl bird that was
circling over this forest. Shot lesser sparrow
in sage flats on way back to camp.
Saw 1 golden-mantled ground squirrel & 2 Eutamias
today - their numbers is probably very low.
Deer sign everywhere today - saw one bucks on
slope in other drainage. Aspen & other trees are
highlines in this area. Butterflies & flowers
are out everywhere & an aspen moth is
extremely abundant. The weather has been
clear & hot here - sees quite weariness
