Christman, John 1962 Journal 26 June Strawberry Creek, 8,000 ft. Snake Range, White pine Co., Nevada. width and steep; running water & juncess meadams. Warbling Vireos, robins, house wrens (collected one), shot one "split-pea" Empidonax and lost another. Found a nest of a yellow-bellied Sapsucker in an aspen along the stream, 20 ft. up, young calling, parent bird went in hole; Aspen & fir about - not a dead tree. Shot a ? Hairy woodpecker in an aspen - was calling loudly. But the dense dark fir area a ruby-crowned kinglet discovered me & scolded loudly & followed me for 20 or so yards. V-green swallows. Several huge old firs are dead here - the ground covered with yellow needles, much downed timber. House sign. Walked back up the steep hill to bridge - many blue- hills & clipping spanaus in Cevocarpus forest. One western tanager singing like a robin. A rapiter hawk looked like a Cooper as to size. Earlier in a.m. I shot a merl bird that was circling over this forest. Shot lesser sparrow in sage flats on way back to camp. Saw 1 golden-mantled ground squirrel & 2 Eutamias today - their numbers is probably very low. Deer sign everywhere today - saw one bucks on slope in other drainage. Aspen & other trees are highlines in this area. Butterflies & flowers are out everywhere & an aspen moth is extremely abundant. The weather has been clear & hot here - sees quite weariness
