Christmas, D.M. 1962 Journal 25 June Sacramento Pass, 7,154 ft., Snake Range, White Pine Co. Nevada Up & out early to the pass N. of the camp we limited from 6-9 a.m. & ran area about 1 mi. SW. of pass at foot of a hill. I worked a series of low ridges & draws covered with a forest of pinyon with 10-15% junipers with Astriscia tridentata. Everywhere the pinyon has a heavy crop of green cones. The junipers have fairly heavy loads of "series." Chipping Sparrows abundant in open sage areas. On the edges of broad shallow draws I spotted 2 a & spotted towhee & scrub jay came. Got the jay. Worked a broad hill side with a dense "pygmy forest" for 1 1/2 hours. Collected 2 plain titmice out of a loose flock of 6 to 8 - Ron put one up. Two Nighthawks were working lower areas to the S. & frequently "booming". There were one pair of Spotted towhees in this area. At least 3 jays, one flock of Lush-tits. In more open areas Green-tailed towhees were common in the sage. Got a Bl-thr. Day Wanderer in a large pinyon in sage flat. Jacks rabbit were abundant - most appeared to be young. We saw 4 good sized Muleys when we entered area. Since did only seen does & fawns in Strawberry perhaps Muleys are together in the pinyon-jumper many deer tracks & droppings. Ron claims to have seen one gray flycatcher - neither, could nor d saw any. We view to abandoned ranch & green meadow NW of the pass. Saw a dozen Brewer's Blackblinds - got one in a hugh wing shot!
