Christmas, D. M. 1962 14. 15 Journal 23 June Strawberry Creek, 8,000 ft. Snake Range, White Pine Co., Nevada Ward & Ron left early to hike to Stella Lake. I left camp early & headed up canyon on the road. Saw a J cross- bird in a large white fir, I shot & it lodged in the top. On up canyon I heard & saw warbling vireos, wood peewees ( called one), robins, and several house wrens, I shot one of the latter in an aspen grove a mile & 1/4 W. of camp, in a log tangle. Went up a slope & saw another white-crowned sparrow. The N. slope of Artemisia is steep - went over a pile of rocks & after much haring & shooting got a rock area. It was sitting from a huge black quinceous ant drop - at least one other, or a pair another - I flushed a spotted fawn - no sign of it. Continued to a rocky ridge covered by Cercocarpus trees. Heard & saw a nutcracker, shot & three flew off to NW with much calling. Continued rounding the hill & as I was crossing a steep slope of 150 yds of short sage saw four nutcrackers in the top of a fir - I approached to 35 yds & shot both barrows with 6's. Several fell - I searched for 40 minutes & never even saw feathers! They must be tough as all hell! As I was crawling over logs a huge grouse flew from a dense medium height fir 15 yds from me & disappeared N over aspen - its blacktail with gray hand (terminal) was spread wide - An initial whir of wings & then irises
