Christman, D.m. 1960 Balaenoptera acutorostrata Oct. 10 Municipal pier Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz Co., Calif. Arrived with Ward Russell and Mike Bartelli about 3 p.m. The whale was dead on the manor rocky beach immediately under the cliff--noed 300 yds W of the pier. We were delayed in an operation of recovering the whale because couldn't find "the harbor master." The whale had been secured with a rope from the tail to the guard rail by the road. Because it was high tide we couldn't get to the animal--the waves were breaking over the body. Weate & after 5 we could walk down the beach to the whale. Ward measured total length at 17'9". The white spot on the pectoral flipper was most evident and a good character. The underside was white -- some silverish. The dorsal fin was noticeable but by no means alwais. The spalaen plates were a pale whitish - yellow -- the fleshy tongue was a grayish pink. The umbilical area - about midway on the ventra - was a slight depression - about 5" diameter. The lateral coloration was black - behind the flippers a dark gray area extended dorsally, breaking up the almost solid black upper sides.
