Oct. 11 Maskell Ranch, 10 mi. s. Marysville, Yuba Co., Calif.
Red Johnson, Dick Banks, R.B. Payne & I left Berkeley
about 8:45 a.m. in V.C. car, to Sacramento, Rio O so & arrived
at about 11 a.m. & immediately started hunting. We
each had a shot gun & used 16 g. #9 shot. Shot until
about 3:30 p.m. and collected 23 blackbirds.
Saw one & carrying nesting material. Hunted between "1
pond and "3. I collected in the SW side of "2 - here
the birds were flying 5. in small flocks intermittently
but twice large flashes of 100+ flew from between
#1 & #2 to the SW. They were feeding in flocks in the
rice fields there. But birds were flying off in all
directions from the marsh. Most of the birds in
fresh plumage. I made one swing into the cattails
from SW side between 2 & 3 - found no nests in 20'
but the cattail were loose & water high so returned
unt. Birds were alighting a little further into the stand.
The others made various examinations of the meeting &
have notes. I shot 10 birds
Oct. 18 Dr. Middlekamp was at the marsh on 9 Oct.
and reports the following nesting data:
5 nests with 1 egg
2 " " 3 "
2 " " 4 "
I believe this was at #1 blind.
