At Yalchin & I left Berkeley & went through the tunnel to Orinda & on to Maragata, where we stopped on a little hill at the end of the double drive - & took several photos here N facing. The Coasteries seems to be encroaching the base of the hills to NW where the land has been cleared. Drieded, there are patches where the shrub has invaded old orchards. On the hill which once must have been a pretentious mansion - ranch HQ there were palms & Coasteries at least 10 ft high. We went on to Canyon. Here is an interesting anomaly. There are remnants of a narrow gauge RR up the canyon- ("S.N.R.R.") which is interesting. The forest appears to be to a large extent seral growth with good sized Eucalyptus sprang among fair sized redwoods! Alnus (shambriolias ?) grows in stream bottoms. Farther up the hill the road is steep winding and the plant composition is mainly oak - madrone Umbellula & Coasteries. We came out onto Skyline Blvd at Park Blvd. & turned right onto Margueta Drive where in 44 mi, we encountered a remnant of margueta (mapatch - dense and blooming. The para lines came through as this cedar paint from the east. The margueta is dense - 6' high and from examining the bases a non- sprouting variety. Photos of Alnus and I Canyon directly East. Other margueta shrubs are scattered through the sprang Eucalyptus grove on the crest of the hill.
