9 Apr. Immediately after leaving Red Bluff heading north the landscape changed from as more or less open woodland of large oaks into one of a dense cover (= 50% - 100%) of smaller oaks usually less than 1 ft. dbh - the trees were closely spaced the ground cover a short grass type with few flowering forbs. After larger were noticed but they were the exception other than valley clearings & settled areas the oak cover increased in density northward and brush increased in % from - 10% to here at Redding of 50-100% although I would not characterize any of this country as 'brush fields'
Itinerary notes
56,290.5 Red Bluff at junction of 99E & W - desertation
96 patch of Pinus sabiniana on hill [area here very rolling with no sharp breaks - gravelly] cattle
98 more P.sabiniana and sheep after marigonta plants though very minor element - 5%
100 onto undulating rolling (gently) plateau 100% grass cover & appears to be cleared far it is surrounded by oaks on all sides soil is red.
02 into rolling hills with dense trees-brush with mechanical clearing of brush on the E side of the road - a much better cover of brush - 75% ground cover is brush and trees.
04 cottonwood creeks & very well marked due to a riparian lining almost exclusive of large cottonwoods and willows
