Christman 1959 Journal 144 8 Apr. Sacramento Valley trip up Hwy #99W to fruit orchards. Almaden is a small typical valley town - high side walls, locust & arbutus, etc. 32 1/2 for a Sheke - arrived at 2:15 left at 3:00. 56,187.9 Misc notes: almost woodland & less so elsewhere there are numerous graves and road lining alder trees. Almost all the way Brewer Blackbirds were along side of road from Woodland to Willows. Just N. of Almaden the area changed to irrigated land - more pheasants, rice fields & permanent pastures. Near Willows ducks seen. Standing water with typha and Scirpus - a wonder if they tend to be mutually exclusive - ? I was surprised to see some Pinus sabiniana in the riparian areas at the Nolo-Colusa Co. line.
