Christmas 1954 Journal Copy '40 15 Mon. Up to Grass Valley, Nevada Co., Calif. with Kerzuls. Down a deep canyon & up onto a ridge- Here is a dense brush-oak-pine area which appears all fouled up: huckeyes, live oaks, p. sabiniana, cercocarpus in forests - all on logged off pine Area of granitic rocks Several small fires are burning on the ridgest N- evidence of controlled burns but not successful - didn't kill or even hit most of the brush- ridges with dense brush. one area with blanket of spurr bush under the pines (pp) mileage 111 turn off at Pearson's corner on to dirt road [better to go down than up- apparently no lumbering on road]- didn't get caught here in fire season!] many small pastures on hills & more level areas - sharp edges for brush and many old ranches and decadent orchards - Very dense and high brush field of many species - a few cattle & stone fence posts- small active farm operations though- not really of the hillbilly type as an edges of Grass Valley and Nevada City. Live oaks mixed with p. sabiniana and paurcassa, a small area of hydraulic mining (115) French Coral - a school & wood building with iron doors: old orchards; acacia in bloom and one palm tree. stone (cobble) fence rare isolated pp or p. s. The black Oaks and poison oak leafing out - also all huckeyes everywhere. N facing slope going down Canyon of pp. & oaks - other slopes of more open brush and p. S.
