Christmau 1959 Journal copy 139 15 Mar. Trip to Grass Valley, Nevada Co., with Kergulds Went (about 11 a.m.) E. on Greenback lane through open rolling oak woodland. Folsom area, Placer Co. Pinus sabiniana - oak woodland with much high brush - on to "Old Auburn Road" (cault) Tombstone formation. Beals Paint - many old orchards, sabiniana and buckeyes. Oak-grass is not climax here. Columns of granite 4-5' tall, 5 + "square used as fence posts. not many old trees, - oaks, etc. Auburn, Placer Co. - and date May 49. at Dry Creek Road some small parkdasa p. to west - crossed Bear River into Nevada Co. many more parkdasa all the time. There are fewer orchards here but more cattle, except for 2 or 3 hard of August all are perfects. Lot of brush-woodland. An abrupt change into good, second growth panderosa p. & sugar p. (few) and mangarita, also black oaks & incense cedar - later transition Grass Valley and Nevada City both busy towns tough still very old, many antique shops and evidence of mining & surrounded by second growth pine and brush - mainly clearcupus and mangarita. To San Juan (after stop at Rough and Ready ). thru good transition 49 mangarita in open areas, with minor amount, of Madrona & Laug./fir & inc. cedar. Many small brush fields. Many small marshy mees - with Typha. Few oaks in some sections - clearcut areas over of open brush with spots of second growth. Evidence of lumbering and old burns. Crossed south Fork of Yuba - deep clayon
