Christensen 1959 Journal 138 14 Mar. Yolo county, Calif. Davis - Woodland The first riparian growth was at Putah Creek just w.of Davis where cottonwood ? and huge Alleluans oaks (Q. lobata-?) are not in leaf yet. the ? cottonwoods have sent out fresh items. Lunch - 78¢ at Davis, Yolo Co. 55°160.0 turn to Woodland through tree lined roadsides - many older ranch homes made with palms, cypress and olives in yards - all ornate from homes - many with oak also. Woodland is well named for there are many huge decid. oaks same omenace. To E on Hwy 16 - soon in an area of sandy soil and fishes with leaves - willows & cottonwoods and many oaks - the drainage ditches with Typha, Scirpus & cool - signs of alkaline in a few spots - white "crustations"-? Much little toe an trees. No Sycamores seen except in towns. > photo #4 2 oaks-tall & slender. 55°179.4 Continued on #6 on into Sacramento, W Sac. has many very large oaks - all decid. Along the w. bank of the river the trees have been pretty well cut out, although alow groves remain - Visited Dutte's Fort and the Indian Museum - the latter is excellent & well designed - 2 oars arranged. The fort contains much old articles but little of value to me except in references especially several maps. Went and to the Rogus' and stayed all night and really enjoyed them & their home.
