14 Mar. Yolo county, Calif. Davis - Woodland
The first riparian growth was at Putah Creek
just w.of Davis where cottonwood ? and huge
Alleluans oaks (Q. lobata-?) are not in leaf yet.
the ? cottonwoods have sent out fresh items.
Lunch - 78¢ at Davis, Yolo Co. 55°160.0 turn
to Woodland through tree lined roadsides -
many older ranch homes made with palms,
cypress and olives in yards - all ornate
from homes - many with oak also.
Woodland is well named for there are many
huge decid. oaks same omenace. To E on
Hwy 16 - soon in an area of sandy soil and
fishes with leaves - willows & cottonwoods
and many oaks - the drainage ditches with
Typha, Scirpus & cool - signs of alkaline in
a few spots - white "crustations"-?
Much little toe an trees. No Sycamores seen
except in towns.
> photo #4 2 oaks-tall & slender. 55°179.4
Continued on #6 on into Sacramento, W Sac.
has many very large oaks - all decid. Along
the w. bank of the river the trees have been pretty
well cut out, although alow groves remain -
Visited Dutte's Fort and the Indian Museum - the
latter is excellent & well designed - 2 oars
arranged. The fort contains much old articles
but little of value to me except in references
especially several maps.
Went and to the Rogus' and stayed all night
and really enjoyed them & their home.
