Vietnam 1959 Journal 225 26 Nov Mother Lode Trip Lobocedrus & sugar pines; red soil; lots of live oaks up a hill - Phatinia and young Q. kelloggii in brush - grass; no pines. patches of pure pines 171 open grassy areas; new undergrowth - a green filmy shrub resembling Scotch Broom [all the way to Kelsey in patches usually as understory & pine, but also seen as pure stands - like chaparral] 1 - again into the forest 17 > 172.3 photographed a flame - in this area an for awhile lots of Madrones - the first that I have seen on this trip. 172.7 George Town 1:00 p.m. many locust trees about this quiet old town - many old people & lumbermen. 174.4 Same fir & P. saliniana in with the panderaea. Madrones - everything here! [Here I took the wrong road - went almost due east up to ridge!] 176 El Dorado Natl Forest. 178.7 manganita is the main understory here - Squaw carpet is very common. Forest is mainly second growth with lots of new young seedlings. 183 off on a logging road turned around!
