20th 1959 Journal 207. Nov. 15 Squaw Valley - Tahoe - Placerville - Berkeley - the term for business reasons - esp. names of establishments. This layout is fantastic - the new accommodations plush, elegant, etc. The valley floor is being settled - except for the major part of the meadow - the houses are well designed - but the mark of the continental alpine ideas & money are very much in evidence. Near today while yesterday was overcast: ate lunch at noon. - Tahoe City - ! > Photograph the river on the road between here & Squaw Valley! This is an area of fir forest with aspen in my pieces. on down the west shore of the lake. Stopped briefly at the Bliss State park - in good shape - fine beach. Collected some Jeffrey pine cones & reeds. Chiebares! Stopped on ridge above the S. end of Emerald Bay - photographed. On back an # 50 - much of the lughos area was recently burned - a slow ground fire which didn't hurt the trees but killed some under growth. Oak leaves - yellow & reddish were over the dark charred litter-rushes. To Colama from Placerville - an # 49 there are Doug. fir, ponderosa pine & typical woodland all the ways, the Gold Discovery State park, etc. Will come back here! dark & 5:30 p. m. ate at El Rancho Hotel (swank!) in West Sacramento. homely ten. There we join traveling companions but it takes same money & patience. This is another way to see the country side - always from the road.
