1959 westman Journal 2012 Sept. From Navarro River to Willets, Mendocino Co., in hands. The fences vary but all of wood with some arbor - a few board ones but mass are vertical shape. Hwy #1 - The inlets are very interesting with boats & concrete bridges over deep ravines. We stopped at Mendocino and photographed many interesting buildings - it has a strong New England flavor. The entire area is studded with fine old houses - most in good repair. Then to Russian River State Park where we photographed more scenery. At Casper we found many evidences of an extensive abandoned lumber operation - Mill ponds, etc. They must have rafted the timber down the river & hauled the logs up the bank by steam cranes. It is a rusty backwood town. Fort Bragg is a fine small city - people dress well. Here we turned up Hwy # 20 and the entire area was deep Campasol redwood forests recovering from lumbering & fire - fairly lush. A few miles from Willets on a high ridge we encountered grassy - oak areas which continued to Ukiah on #101. There are areas where grass is the sole growing plant among the turnt camfer snags. And the broad sclerophyll forest is everywhere except next & the coast. The broad leaved trees are understory & riparian Oaks. Fir is significant in this redwood area.
