Berkeley to Boonville, Mendocino Co., Cal.
I left at 12:50 pm ( ) & via
Santa Rosa to Cloverdale & Amer Hwy.
128 to Clevea & jins at about 4:30 p.m.
The area from San Rafael to Petaluma
is hilly grass-oaks from areas of
pine grass to dense woodland. This
area should be considered as a
masaic"wood lands-grass" and not
"grassland". From the bay area near Petaluma
to Healdsburg the land is flat and perhaps
was grassland - but oaks on all
of the hills. There are oaks in the flats
about Healdsburg. The road from
Cloverdale to Boonville is very
interesting - 2 apple tracks, one of
sheep and 6 lumber - 2 of cut
lumber & of red wood logs. The
fences are good - mainly post-wire,
but lots of shake & split wooden
fences. Generally the NE side of the
road was spotty with open grass &
broad sclerophyll woods. - a few
spots of serpentine - the SW side of
the valley is woodland - long fir-red-
wood. Many areas have been burned
over - tall burnt canutes & a
understory of persian oal & sprouting
oaks, etc. This is a good example
of succession - long time lapse area
where the hills & d drive down to the
flatsag & meads - there are many fine
examples of fures, means, one cemetery
and houses.
