Christmas 1959 173 11 Apr. Yuba Siskiyou Co., Calif. out at 10:00 a.m. breakfast, 62& at Cal. Div. Forestry, 5. of town, (Closed) 504 area of ponderosa p. esp. on hills; oak (almost pure) on flats and lower hills which are also covered with ceanothus and cerocarpus. 508 ponderosa and manzanita in a band down from hill to SW. Extensive blocks of pure oak, closely set and under 1'6th > 509.6 photos of old house, oaks, laurel (?) and b hills on E. of road. 514 one mile & of Grenada -- off of Byw 99 photos by a stream with a few willows. To east are many small hills with juniper, sage and black rocks. ponds with coots. Black billed magpies and mallards. Hereford cattle a few stone fences 516 juniper forest 517 a small lake 11: a.m. yellow headed black birds in song flight, etc and in cattails flattened 3'/ft above water -- they were down in the up-righ pullets a sma sail flew from one clumpsy catail to another - looks like a heavy dickey bird muskrat swam by. coots predominate *the* birds on lake no breeding Heliolani notes Buffle head ? ; can-asbacks, pies-billed Grebe. a fair number of ruddy ducks & in breeding plumage - blue bills, hull nests & signs of broodling behavior. other small ponds mallards mewdow larks; cal. guat on fence post
