Washington 1959 Journal 169 Siskiyan 10 Apr. Yreka, Shasta Co., and north on Hwy #99 The hills NW of town are covered with brush - mainly cleanthus; conifers spotty except at higher elevations and many bare areas. Dense willow riparian areas) Jumipers dot country to the east and oaks are everywhere - None of the oaks in the Shasta River drainage are even leafed out - thus it is hard to identify them. 449. 3 a large suspension bridge over the Shasta Rive The hillside are covered with brush - mainly ceanothus in bloom; some ponderosa but not much, at roadside a small patch of yerba santa in disturbed area - none other seen. Oaks are abundant on hill sides - very dry. This is a deep canyon of dark rocks. 451. 4 Crossed the Klamath R. & turn off down river to Happy Camp etc. This looks very much like the old photo I saw in Bancroft - I believe it was taken down the river several miles from here. Swallows (motel etc.) elev. 2,000' 457 into a rolling river valley with pines junipers and brush - up a tributary of the Klamath. 458 Turned offside road to east and took 2 sets of photos first to 5 & then up this canyon Many small cattle ranches here mi. NNE of Yreka)
