10 Apr.
Redding, Shasta Co., north on Hwy 99
11:00 337 left Redding - couldn't find Diamond Mtn.
across Sacramento R. & up hill onto
rolling plateau with lots of P. saliniana
and manzanita - which is not in
bloom (the specimens I collected
yesterday 5 mi. E. Redding had already
collected)
46 broad flat valley - Fish Station
with few oaks
47 into hills with P. ponderosa, second
growth with an average 50% more or
less cover as brush. 1/2 or more of the
conifers are P. saliniana with
many oaks.
51 crossed Pit River bridge - many
hill sides all oak or brush with the
pines spotty, thinning perhaps for
saliniana to be on S. exposures.
stopped here - few evergreen oaks which
maybe tanoaks - some new growth
& 8 Catalinas
P. saliniana in plantations - is this an
aggressive invader of California terrain?
Many oaks in fresh bright green foliage =
black oaks? Q. kelloggii
66 Dog Creek - starting down hill - the
saliniana decreases & Doug fir takes
over, and about 70 inches cedar
shears & and becomes part of the
forest
Siskiyou Co.
