Christmas 1954 Journal 165 Apr. Red Bluff, Shasta Co., Calif., north on Hwy. 99 the hills is about the same woodland brush I wanted be wise to check out the land use of this area. 5:15' passed Sacramento River on 99 N. of town and stopped at the "Monterey Motel" - with very fine services, etc at $3.50 expenses: eats, coffee up to 6:00 p.m. = $1.94 bought a straw ranch hat & sport shirt in Red Bluff = $6.35. In the early A.M. high feathery clouds to west NW & SW and this eventually thickens and covered entire sky in the late afternoon. Was warm with humidity, up though not very noticeable. Red Bluff is a very clean and compared with some of the valley towns i., fairly modern. The streets are not crowded except for through traffic. The people dress well and, especially the women in stores & offices, wear a 'modern ranch' get-up of riding pants, blouse & tie, etc. The "western" influence is not evident. A few older buildings in town, tho the near residences are at times very old. The economy is up - new cars, etc. though still small Townish, esp. the older businesses. Walter Stoll was friendly & cooperative though not well informed either by reading or investigation. Can't remember much 'new' well. I don't think he tried to fool me. The hide shipping business of his father was verified by his older brother who runs the store, now that Walter has retired.
