NAM Verleek 1966 Calidris alpina (3) A male chased a ? hong spurn on two occasions to day west of Honey Bucket. The chase lasted in about 15 m. i each case. 15 June. The Red-Backs were quiet today. It seems that their territories are established and they are fully occupied incubating In the 3.5 hours I was - the field (Drum Area) I only heard one male snig (only one) and I saw one other bird. 16 June. Pitelka and I found one nest between South Salt Lagoon and Honey Bucket Lagoon. There were four eggs. The nest was located on the edge of a mount among 9-10 cm high dead gaps. 17 June We found two more Redback nests each with 4 egg, on the drum area. 18 June Witnessed a chase involving three Redbacks, 2? ?, q. At the end of the chase the three birds landed and the male engaged in a physical battle. Saw one male, the owner of the female pull at a feather of his opponent, who by this time tried to go away and when he managed to pull free he flew away leaving the pair behind. 19 June I flushed the female of Nest . Her distraction display - one in which the tail is spread and depressed, the rump and lower back feathers are ruffled, the wings droop and the bird walks with small step - a crowded manner. While she thus walks away from you she throws glances over her shoulder to left ad right and she utters a hoars sneezy barrage of pathetic notes.
