Calidris bairdii (w)
11 Aug. Back at Barrow, I failed to see a single Baird Sandpiper today.
24 Aug. Observed one bird feeding along a small pond. The bird fed by itself and did not mix with semipalmated Redbacks which fed in a nearby pond. This is the first Baird I have seen at Barrow in August.
26 Aug. Finished the mapping of the nest distribution on the Drum Area. With the exception of nest 7 x 18, all nests are anywhere from 75 to 150 step (±3 feet) apart or an average distance of 100 step (300 ft). Territory size - taking the nest as centre of the territory - is about 6.5 acres, about half the size as given for Red-backs (12-17 acres) by Holmes.
