7-mi N.E. Port Yuma, 200 ft. Imperial Co. Calif.
hispidus (caught in Bermuda grass near bamboo)
2 Perognathus penicillatus, 6 Mus musculus
and 5 Reithrodontomys.
p.m.- Rain during late morning and early
afternoon. - Drove into Yuma for mail
and supplies. - On return at 1-mi. E of Bard
contacted George Barry, a government employee
hired to trap gophers from banks of the irrigation
ditches, and from him obtained 16 Thomomys
which were wet and bloody and since future
prospect of obtaining more from him looks
good these were discarded. Barry says
he sets out about 75 traps per day and
catches 20-40 pocket gophers during 1 day.
After supper we looked at 8 rat traps set
along canal bank in freshly cut bamboo
and obtained 3 Sigmodon from them.-
2 young individuals were taken from the
same trap, evidently having been caught simul-
taneously.
Dec. 25 (a.m.) 6 Sigmodon, 4 Reithrodontomys, 2 Mus were
taken in trap line. 1 Thomomys caught in gopher trap
set along canal bank. In p.m. a short trip was
taken to mine shaft located in dry wash at
3-mi. N Potholes, 250 ft., Imperial Co. Calif., where
colony of Macrotis californicus was present.
