Itinerary
Ludlow, 1712 ft., San Bernardino Co., Calif.
Dec. 20 - Yesterday in company with John Davis and Chas. E. Sibley left Berkeley and drove to camp about 15 mi. W Barstow. This morning motor trouble made it necessary to stop at Ludlow for repairs. In p.m. I hiked about 1 mi. west of town to hill of rough reddish colored volcanic rock partially covered with drifted sand. Set out a line of 80 mouse traps and 3 rat traps in the vicinity of and on the hill, located at edge of railroad tracks. Traps were baited with walnut meats and were set at distances varying from 10 to 30 yds. apart where sign of Dipodomys and Perognathus was noted. The soil (aside from drifted sand and rock) is fairly sandy with small pebbles and rocks forming a pavement-like surface in spots. Vegetation of the vicinity is composed of Larrea divaricata (creosote bush) spaced at 4-10 yd intervals; Atriplex jolycaarpa ? and Grayia sp. ?.
Dec 21 - a.m.- Picked up traps. Catch consisted of 11 Dipodomys merriami and 2 Dipodomys deserti (Caught in rat traps buried in sand at entrance to burrow). Shortly after noon
