ttin J. E. 1939 Itinerary July 14- Marshall 200ft, Klickitat Co, Wash. (A.M.) - Preserved garter snakes canyal at Hood River. - Present camp site is located on the north shore of the Columbia R. near the edge of the water. The surrounding country is composed of outcrops of lava and drifted sand with willows growing at intervals along the river bank. Above the high-water level the land slopes back gradually to be met by talus slopes which have formed from the higher rim-rock along the canyon. This gradually sloping area has sandy soil and is utilized in spots for farming (alfalfa and fruit orchards esp). Several different ledges of lava are present along the rim and form short benches which are covered with rocky soil on which sagebrush and cheat grass are the dominant plants. Mustard, wild oats and scrubby bushes are present in some spots. (P.M.) Set out 75 mouse traps along a dry wash N of Marshall. Traps were set about 15 paces apart. Vegetatin
