Columbia R. 30m at mouth of Deschutes Ore.
light colored sand much of which
is drifted into small dunes.
Along the edges of the river there
are willows and cottonwood trees,
a sedge (Carex) grows along the
river bank and on small islands
in the river. On the West side
of the river the slopes back from
the river are of sandy soil
covered with sagebrush, Rabbit
brush and Cheatgrass (Bromus). The
upper slopes show outcroppings
of basalt and a few scrubby
junipers. The East side of
the river bank slopes less
steeply at the mouth and
several forms a meadow where
hay and truck crops are grown.
The side hills are also covered
with sagebrush and cheatgrass
with bare rimrocks near
the upper edges. Birds seen or
heard near the river mouth
include: Western Robin, Arkansas Kingbird,
California Gull, Blue Heron, Lazuli Bunting
Song Sparrow Violet Bronc Swallow Cliff Swallow
Sparrow Hawk, Meadow Lark
