11 mi. N E Weed, ft., Siskiyou Co., Calif.
Party composed of A.W. Johnson, Frank J.
Hooper, Donald Hoffmeister, Bill Longhurst,
Lloyd Davis and John E. Chattin left the
Mus. of Vert. Zool.-U of Calif. Berkeley at 9:20 A.M.
June 27. U.S. highway 40 was
followed NE to 10 mi. beyond Dixon
where highway 99 W was followed to Red Bluff.
From here highway 99 was followed to
Weed; from Weed highway 97 was followed
to the present site. This site 11 mi. NE
of Weed is near the old railroad siding
Delaney. The soil is loose gray sand
about 6 in. deep with some fine
gravel intermixed. The ground is dry
to a depth of at least 1 ft. Slope
is very gentle but rocky outcrops
are present on either side. Many
sawed stumps of Pinus ponderosa are
present, some of which are fire-scarred.
The Life-Zone is Transition as indicated
by yellow pine & sagebrush (Artemisia
Tridentata). Vegetation in the
clearing includes Artemesia tridentata,
Pinus ponderosa, Purshia tridentata
(Antelope brush) Arctostaphylos(?)(manzanita)
Juniperus occidentalis (western juniper)
and a kind of bunch grass which
