Chatting. 1940 Itinerary 18½ mi. NW Portland, 1300 ft., Washington Co., Oregon these times. July 23 (Cont'd) July 24 - a.m. - Inspection of traps showed 4 or 5 out of 40 sprung in line in virgin timber along creek, but no mice were caught. Runways and holes are numerous in the thick cover of litter on the ground but mice apparently are few in number. 1 young ♀ Microtus was caught along creek in line of 75 traps set in logged area. 2 Eutamias townsendii were shot in open patch of burned over timber. 1 Sciurus douglasii was shot from its perch 20 ft. up a standing rotten log. p.m. - Checked steel sets set for Aplodontia and set 10 more Schyler rat traps baited with potato and dried apricots in Aplodontia runs. Also set out 40 more small mouse traps baited with raisins. Traps were set in grass - Clover, Carex and "wild hay" (red top) at lower end of cleared field. At 8:25 p.m. shot ♀ Myotis flying at height of 18-20 ft.. July 25 a.m. Picked up line of traps in heavy timber along creek - Trap line along creek thru logged area contained only 1 Song sparrow. - The trap line of 46 traps set in meadow contained 4 Mus musculus, 1 ♂ Sorex, 1 ♀ Peromyscus m. rubidos., and 1 Microtus. Also shot ♂.
