J. Chatter Lepus washingtonii Brooks Mdw. 4300 ft. 9 mi. ENEMt. Hood, Hood River Co., Oregon July 7 (7:00 A.M.) - Shot a snowshoe rabbit near roadside at edge of forest. Fairly heavy undergrowth - shrubs and herbaceous plants. Rabbit hopped across road about 10 yds ahead of observer and stopped after reaching cover. Approached fairly close (12 ft) and then backed off and shot rabbit at 7 yds distance. (5:30 P.M.) - Shot young L. washingtonii in brush thicket near edge of small stream. Animal noted after taking shot shop, remained motionless for short time and was shot with .410 avg. at distance of about 15 ft. July 8 (6:10 A.M.) - Lepus washingtonii shot beneath Douglas fir in herbaceous undergrowth. Rabbit only 3 yds distant when first observed; it hopped away and stopped after going only about 5 yds where it was shot with .410 avg (12 ch.).
