JOURNAL July (5 cont) trip to Yosemite Nat'l Park, Madera Co., Calif. righ road heads into Stables; Sierra Club parking lot. D. didn't go to end of road but drove off & went down to river. ~7:00-7:30 P.M. - getting bit dark. River ~12-15' wide but shallow. Caught 1 R. muscosa but that was all. Went back to main road & went down ~ 1/2 mi & backed to where river came close to road & crossed it. Walked along bank ~ 15 min - no sign of frogs. By now was ~8:00-8:15 P.M. rapidly getting dark. Went back to 'Sierra Club' but road just above dirt road. Pulled off road leading to stable. Laid out sleeping bags ~ 500 yds off road near field in which had seen 3 deer ~ 10 min before. Awoke ~5:30 A.M. Chilly. Left by 6:00 A.M. Stopped for ~10 min at Cathedral Ck. To see if any frogs might be out. May still be too cold. Continued driving, setting breakfast as we went. Stopped at Siesta Lake but again no luck. Wonder where the frogs go at night? Continued home to Berkeley, arriving ~11:30 A.M. As put animal away, esp. R. muscosa note the gt diff in degree of ventral coloration
