Lake trip, Calif
April
Drove up to Upper Lake & took road
to Lake Pillsbury. Planned to
take turnoff to Bear Creek. However
missed turn and got down to the
Lake itself and farther up the
road, the Eel River. Stopped
at stream which crossed
by bridge just at mouth
of stream where enters Eel
River. Walked ~ 500 yds upstream
to where got rather steep. A lot
was open to many rocks on the
banks. Farther up more
vegetation closer to stream.
Many Sceloporus occidentalis !
Encountered ~ 20 as walked up-
stream. Also saw Thamnophis
(Caught ! Rana boylii (see sp.
account).
Returned up road to try
to find Bear Creek turnoff.
Found we had missed it because
sign read "Road Closed for Wintu".
Decided to try it anyway. Road
hardly rutted! Got to point
where road crosses Rice Fork -
