Freeman Cyn, 2 mi below Walker Pass, Kern Co., Calif
remain at this elevation, though at higher elevations
in the surrounding hills, snow is abundant.
Gopher sign from the snow-pack days is in
abundance, as at Rose Valley. Here and there
are fresh mounds, indicating that there's been
little recent activity. I set 15 sets of live-traps,
most of them consisting of 2 traps/station. I
stayed pretty close to the spur road going up
Freeman Cyn (parallel to Hwy 178), so that
I might easier find them at night.
6pm It's getting dark now and I've checked
& rechecked the traps for activity. Several gophers
responded to the challenge of an open burrow,
but most did not, yet. No captures. 8pm
Still no captures. 9pm Checked and reset trapes
for last time tonight. I've reset nearly everyone,
since the gophers are still out-witting me.
Off to Inyokern to spend the night.
11pm had dinner at "Two Sisters Plus One" in
Inyokern but no rooms to let. Convention time
they say. So I drove back thru Freeman Cyn to
Weldon, where I found a motel off the south
side of the Hwy. $ 14.00 + tax.
24 Jan 9am Checked traps. 2 live captures, 1 frozen juvenile f.
Swollen vteri, as at Rose Valley. Most of the other traps
had been sit off. It seems the doors weren't closing all
