Rose Valley Ranch, 2.5 mi N. Coso Jct., Inyo Co., Calif
21 Jan.
Arrived here ~ 6:30-7:00 pm, having left
Berkeley ~11am. Stopped in Livermore,
Coalinga (gas), Mojave. It seems pretty
warm relative to normal (~50°c)
Too dark to set gopher traps, so stopped
in at Little Lake for a beer. Met
60-year old Doris Bliss. She'd had thru
3 husbands, and was out seeing the sights
in her VW bug; had quite a few laughs.
Slept above Coso Jct.
22 Jan
5am Started setting gopher traps. The
gopher sign (fresh wounds i.e.) isn't
everywhere (as in spring/summer). Fresh
wounds are found every 20-50 feet in
the area near the roads. But in the
interior, they seem to be more sparse.
Set 35 meacles at 25 stations; and
all 8 my livetraps (35).
10pm Eating dinner at Olancha. I catalogued
8 gophers thus far. 3've got 4 live ones awaiting
numbers. No males yet - all females. All 8
them are in reproductive condition. The uteri are
swollen in all cases - some of them greatly so, with
vascularization/placentation sign. I clipped 4 or 5
out and preserved them in alcohol... One female
(924) had 6 embryos - probably about 5mm long.
