S Villa Colon, Prov. San Jose, Costa Rica 740m
31 July. Arrived here round 3:30pm after driving from San Jose. Before leaving San Jose we secured a 'suite' in the Pension Americana off Ave Central. What a dirt!
But for $150 it will serve its purpose tonight. We drove west out Paseo Colon, onto the freeway and south to the Villa (or Ciudad) Colon exit. From here we drove into Villa Colon for lunch. The locality we were told about lies southwest of Colon.
After scouting out the area we decided on the dirt road shown above. Followed this out to a river. Just before the river to the left is [illegible] our first locality, 90 traps set here. Continuing over the river another km, we found another 2° forest. Neither are particularly good it seems, but this area is heavily settled. 6:30pm after setting out 90 traps at the second locality, we leave for town. 7:00-9pm prepare the remaining traps.
1 August
Leave Pension Americana for the trapping sites.
Site 1: 2 Proechimys semispinosus, 1 Sigmodon hispidus.
Site 2: 2 Proechimys semispinosus, 8 Liomys salvini
The proechimys were caught in 2 situations. The first (site 1) was fairly dense undergrowth – herbaceous. The second (site 2 and at the Puerto Limon locality) is fairly open 2° forest.
