Journal 5.6 1am SE Turrialba, Prov Cartago, Costa Rica 450m no promise for heteromyg. This [illegible] locality is just over ( ) the huge crossing of the Rio Relevezon. Secondary forest, very dense undergrowth. Ferns. Llanas. Prickly vines. Assorted cloud forest plants. The slopes bordering the forest are steep (from sheer faces to 100% slopes) - much of the area is only accessible by hiking up the trail/abandoned road to the E of the river where the bank bordering the forest is only several meters high. This is all to say that access is difficult. [illegible] After setting 80 Sherman's in this forest, I'm unsure of what to expect. Probably nothing, or at best very little. Many parts of the forest are too steep for rodents and much of it is narrow in width (<20m), being bordered by cane & banana fields. 7:00pm In the town of Turrialba - had a difficult time finding a hotel. Found one finally for $150. 7:30-9:30pm dinner & drinks at a local restaurant. 20 July 0630 staff rise to queue and head out for our traps 1000am Captures numbered 7: Reithro davis, Oryzomys #? and 5 heteromyg desmarestianus.
