24 July.
3.9 km SE Playa del Coco, Guanacaste Prov., Costa Rica 50m
1:30pm Sitting here in the Juan air restaurant adjacent
to our hotel ( # 280 colones), looking out at the
bay. Beers are #17 but Jim Beam is #60 (as I
learned last night). Yesterday we set 200 Sherman's
up around the city dumps (not in g course).
About 1/2-1/2 uphill - downhill. I set 40 in
shrubby 2° growth and open habitat (shrub up to
overstory). The ground is dry but cover is
70-80% overall. Here I caught 4 Liomys salvini.
Also set 40 traps in roadside grassland --
nothing caught there. Total captures were 23
individuals ( Duke = 9 ; El = 8 ; Plat = 6 ). None
pregnant near as I can tell. This morning met up
again w/ Heinz Pfug (flog), our new friend
from Hans ? from Fian S of the Nicaragua Frontier. Heinz
is a bit obnoxious, but a good sport. Native German.
Flew w/ the Luftwaffe, spent some time bombing
London; now a rancher. He & his worker Leonard
drank a coca & beer w/ us before we went back to
work on the animals. Tonight we'll set out bat nets.
But not before we hit the annual festival in Liberia
where the people celebrate the 1821 Secession from
Nicaragua at accession to Costa Rica.
25 July
10am Had a bit of a bonnet in Liberia last night.
Unfortunately, we never set the bat nets - it started
raining at the festival & we were having such a good time.
