Journal 4.6 5.0 km E (by road) Tilaram, Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica 22 July 9 am ~ 250 traps were set at these two localities after much driving around. We eventually saw 2 sides of Lake Arenal - a beautiful natural lake further north of these localities. The 5.0 km locality overlooks Lake Arenal from the south. Both localities are 2° growth hardwood forest - the first being along a riparian habitat bounded by the bay and a farm. Here Ed & I saw two armadillos length about 1 foot (total). Whether there were Cabassous or Dasypus I knew not; neither are supposed to be diurnal - thought these were clearly juveniles. They disappeared down their burrows amidst thick riparian ground cover. For the next hour of setting traps in the forest paralleling the riparian area & saw considerable sign (burrows & smaller diggings probably the result of foraging) in the area. After setting 50 traps in this area, Duke & I drove E to N further yet some 6.9 km. Ed & I hiked then up the hill from here into dense 2° forest; I went down the hill (in the direction of the lake) into comparable 2° forest. Between worries of charging bulls (& crossed their pasture) & fer de lance, I was greatly distracted.
