Journal Cerros de la Carpintera, 2 km S (by road) San Diego Prov. San Jose, Costa Rica 1450 m 19 July trapped Heteronmys. Ed + Duke set traps in similar or the same habitats. of ~240 traps we caught 6 Scotinomy's teguina + 1 Orizomy's alfaro'. One Scotinomy's (PUB 741) yielded a single late term embryo and another (PUB 746) had a somewhat smaller embryo. 741 embryo was separately placed in formalin whereas the entire carcass of 746 was fluid-preserved. The Scotinomy's are diurnal - we heard them singing around the car this a.m. while we worked. Their jivkings last night (trap success that is) - perhaps because of the disturbed nature of the entire area. The whole canyon is inhabited by Costa Ricans - look somewhat like Daly City - row upon row of homes. Prefab. Oscar's home, however, was hand-made + sits up higher in the canyon. He slept in his 2nd room. Drank coffee w/ he + his wife last night and again w/ Oscar this morning. San Jose Hwy 2 Tres Rios -> Cartago ~ dirt road (there are usual dirt roads - and getting to them from the Carretera Interamericana is a royal pain).
