San Jose, Costa Rica (Hotel Galileo, Avenida
Centrale y Calle 13)
14 July.
330 pm Pete Rogers, El Heke and 8 arrived here
last night round 11pm. Taking a minibus cab
from the airport, we tried to find room at
(Calle Nueva y Avenida Nueva y [illegible]) a hotel
recommended by M. Hagner. Ended up here.
Today we ran errands to the permit office,
liquid nitrogen store (Industriales Ligerido),
Farmacias (por formalin & cotton). All in all,
a successful day - the permits will be ready
tomorrow as will a gallon of 40% formalin
(at 532 colons/gal.). Walking around San Jose &
taking cabs to the University etc. has been a fine
introduction to the people here. Lots of them.
Young age structure - vast median age seems
to be 20-25 yrs. Many uncleaned children.
The people are friendly - there's much eye
contact, particularly from the younger people,
and smiles come easily. Datsun & Mitsubishi seem
to be having a field day here. Most cars are
made by them. The weather is tolerable - alternating
between sunny & hot of moderate humidity and
cool breezy overcast skies. Many carry portable
umbrellas. We stopped by the University of Costa
Rica
