Journal 16 April Rose Valley Ranch, 2.5 mi N. Coso Jct, Inyo Co., Calif 930pm Arrived here last night, left (1030pm) after driving up from Mecca - Palm Springs area. Had gone there to find creosote habitat but was largely unsuccessful. 40 desert had been taken at Mecca in 1908 (see MVZ catalogue) but the area now is 100% agriculture. And the wind was blowing 75+ mph. So today I've been working the alfalfa fields for live Thomomys. Caught 5 so far around the ranch-house. Smart little devils. Am using J.L Patton's lim-traps. Set 15 of them and check them every hour, move then / reset them. 17 April To date have caught 9 pocket gophers. Also set 180 Shermans across the highway along the California aqueduct and surrounding creosote flats. 18 April 730pm After a long day I finally have a chance to write some notes. This mornings trap results were not very encouraging. Of 180 traps set along the aqueduct in formous habitat and in the creosote flats (longimembri's habitat) - roughly evenly distributed in these 2 habitats and spaced at 10m - the following results were had: longimembris o= 5_ (released) f 3 formouns o= 6 (kept for S. Sherwood) f 3 ? maniculatus 4
