1 mi E Olancha, Buys Co. Calif
24 March tipped me on this dune locality. Just south of the
395-190 Junction turn east (immediately N. of Cottonwood
Cafe) and drive for a mile or so. The dunes mainly
Start north of the dirt road. Good access. Wonderful
deserti habitat. Or so I suspect. Set 80 Sherman's
in 3 lines in the dunes. Plenty of entrapped dune
habitat left - particularly in the central dunes
area and the eastern dunes area. Also, the dunes
extend east (south of 190) all the way to the 190-136 Jct.
(see 11-12 March 1982). 4pm head south to set 2 more
sets of traps - one at Rose Valley Ranch for pocket gophers
and one along the aqueduct scree for P. formosus.
5:30 pm Finished setting the pocket gopher traps. Set
10 live traps and 9 macabees, usually in tandem.
2.7 mi N. Coso Junction, Inyo Co., Calif
5:30pm arrived here (turn west at Dunmore and take
earth road to the aqueduct) and met Phil Hennis, part
owner of the Rose Valley Ranch. We talked for some 45 minutes
about pocket gophers, government (Fish & Game, BLM), and
the contract I worked on out here 3 summers ago. Stayed
in a trailer home on the Rose Valley Ranch in fact.
