24 March Farm check the traps and pick them up. Two
microlipodops!! Elevation here's around 5300 ft and
snow's still found in pockets (rare though). Daytime
temperature was ~70°F and nighttime round 35°F.
Still, either K-mice don't occur on this plot or they're
still in winter estivation. I suspect the latter.
Only caught on P. parvus, a nullip. ♀. She died
in the trap. Probably she was among the first of her
kind above ground after the winter. Can't say for sure
of course. Also caught D. neviansi, and probable D. ordii
[illegible] and what appears to be D. panamintius. All ♀
These latter 3 were kept in the Shermons, supplemented
w/ sand, lettuce and feed. Haven't time to really look
them over since I'm heading south again. Three neviansi
♀♀ of which I sacrificed and examined showed little/no sign
of pregnancy. Perhaps very early. All panamintius were
non-scrotal. Those 8 kept. Therefore, reproduction is
not underway here for the heteromyids. Though I
did release D. maniculatus (30♂♀, 1♀), one ♀ which
I sacrificed showed well-developed embryos. This contrasts
with the Coso Mt maniculatus which gave birth before
my visit on 10-11 March 1982. The 2000 ft difference in
elevation has quite a marked effect. 1230pm load
up and head south. (See catalogue for species list).
