Journal 3.6 mi E, 10.1 mi N Anibay, San Bernardino Co., Calif 20 March The habitat there is creosote scrub. I hadn't expected this to be such prolific habitat for merriami. Oddly enough, not a single other species was captured. A few lepus californicus were seen. The area clearly shows signs of a recent storm - standing water in puddle in few places; moist/damp ground. Perhaps the storm kept all good merriami underground & my bait was especially alluring to them. 7.7 mi S, 3-mi W Kelso, Kelso Dunes, San Bernardino Co., Calif 20 March Arrived here round 1:30 pm after stopping out the area. This site lies along the public access route to the dunes and doubles in this vicinity as an airstrip. Day-hikers are common here, and as such is a problem: potential loss of traps, many questions, etc. I'm just west of the dunes. Creosote flats 100-200 meters deep separate me from the dunes. Grasses grow in tussocks around the rolling hills (sand) at the base of the big dune. Heavily grazed, 5pm Set 4 lines of 20 traps each, mostly in the grassy areas: 3 lines paralleled the length of the dune and one heads for the main sand peak. Still 1/2 mi or so short of the dune peaks. Traps set at 15-20 m distances to maximize deserti captures. This should be good deserti habitat but one never knows, particularly because of the heavy grazing. 21 March 730am Checked the lines. The line heading into the junco sand (w/ few grasses) yielded only 1 deserti. The other lines,
