17 March
winter storm this year just left the southland, hence my 4-day delay in getting back out into the field.
Flash Flood warnings were out for the desert. Definitely a jeopardy to this fledgling research project. The weather today was quite civil, mid 60s in temperature.
10-20mph winds, billowy cumulus clouds. White one.
Tonight, the sky is clear, giving view to bright stars
in the moonless sky. 9:30pm checked one line and brought in 4 ff (released 4 of them); no other captures.
Three ff showed embryos, but very early in development:
PVB 539,540 probably mated earlier this week. PVB 541 appears to
be 7-14 days pregnant. #542 showed an abnormal
growth on the kidney. Concernous? Temperature at 10pm
is 6°C.
20 March
12noon Pulled up all 7 line traps. What a catch! All
merriami individuals were sexed on the spot and most
all fff released. Catalogued 34 merriami; 5 oof, 29 ff.
In addition, 3 juveniles (or sub-adult?) were saved
line and will be catalogued soon. 20 oof were released.
Bringing total captures to round 60. Several females in
the traps were dead from the cold and had bloated
themselves (and [illegible] early development embryos) -- so these weren't
catalogued. A fruitful trap-night. The full range of
embryo sizes was seen. Modal or mean values are beyond
me at this point, particularly since I must pack up
and reach the Kelso Dunes and set trap lines.
