Vicente Costa Junction, Inyo Co., Calif.
(Sept cont'd) The rocky-scrub habitat yielded the
following species:
P. crinitus 10 (all released)
Perognathus formosus 1 (live)
P. longimembris 1 (in alcohol)
D. merriami 3 (released)
D. microps 2 ( " )
17 captures/25 traps
Again, most animals were fixed in 10% formalin.
Since I've already captured a number of merriami's,
(and Peromyscus), there were released. Also, since
I need to break camp and head to Walker Pass,
the fewer animals to groom, the better. My plan
for catching deserti didn't work. They certainly
aren't numerous here -- but there's certainly
more than one. The sand isn't loose or deep
enough (or both) here. The valley winds scour
the flats leaving a fine pavement of sorts --
not the typical deserti pavement however.
Weights & total body length of merriam k-rats are:
220/36.5; 250/39.5; 240/33.5; 250/34; 240/39.5; 215/34.5
235/35; 246/36; 245/36. The circled individuals
are probably this year's juveniles. Apparently they
reach adult weight prior to adult body length (?)
We know that adult proportions are reached a month
or so after parturition -- this places the event
in early July or later. Wait! The first individual had
a broken tail. The second may have escaped my notice
