Los Padres Nat'l Forest, San Luis Obispo Co., Calif Elev. 2000 ft
30 July Small draw vegetated by poison oak, grasses (-/ fern & of runways), 5 Perognathus californicus (2 of which were found in 1 live trap), 5 Dipodomys one of which was snap-trapped, the rest live trapped. About 65% of the museum specials on the transects over the turned-over chamise habitat were springy. These traps are simply too small to hold the Dipo's. One was captured in a snap trap but it was caught just on the neck - and still the trap was moved some distance. P. maniculatus were common on the recently turned-over chamise hill.
The single trice was caught in the "old growth" dense chamise, as were many maniculatus. Nearly all the animals were pickled in formalin - 2 Dipo's & 2 Perognathus were kept alive. We'll transpport them in the Shermans since yesterday's experience suggests this is easier on them than the glass jars. 1 pm Depart for points West probably Hunter-Liggett Reserve or thereabouts. Also should note that single maniculatus was found bearing embryos.
The 3 Dipo's I opened up were SS & hence F reprod. Stages here now are unknown.

30 July 145 Just finished setting trap lines in chaparral-oak woodland habitat. Arrived at this site several hours ago - not by design. We headed N from Jolon expecting to reach the Los Padres Nat'l Forest to the north of here.
